From vision to reality: Arctic Import’s role in transforming Nuuk Airport

Background and project scope
We played a key role in the development of the new, large-scale Nuuk Airport. The goal of the project was not only to improve infrastructure but also to create a modern and welcoming environment for both local and international travelers.

Under the leadership of Jan Rasmussen, and in close collaboration with Greenland Airports and the airport’s architects, we delivered a comprehensive solution that included furnishing workspaces, business lounges, waiting areas, and dining facilities. The project spanned from early 2023 to November 2024 and required innovative solutions and precise coordination every step of the way.

Deliveries and solutions
Arctic Import provided a complete furnishing package, including:

  • Workspaces: Approximately 50 desks with corresponding office chairs.
  • Business and waiting areas: Furniture for a business lounge and waiting areas accommodating up to 150 passengers.
  • Cafés and dining areas: Facilities on both sides of security as well as airside near the runway.
  • Children’s play areas: Designed and installed play zones to create a fun and safe experience for young travelers.

Greenland Airports had specific requirements regarding colors, quality, and design, ensuring alignment with the airport's architecture. For example, the color palette was inspired by Greenland’s natural landscape, featuring light blue tones reflecting the ice, warm orange mirroring the evening sun, and light green shades inspired by the Northern Lights. These aesthetic choices were carefully integrated to harmonize with the airport’s architectural style and Greenland’s natural beauty.

Logistical challenges and close collaboration
The project demanded extensive logistical planning and flexibility, particularly regarding transportation and security. All furnishings were shipped to Greenland, screened by the airport’s security systems, and installed without disrupting daily operations.

They have been incredibly cooperative and helpful. It has been truly outstanding,” says Jan Rasmussen about the collaboration with airport staff and Greenland Airports, adding:

A huge thank you to the dedicated teams of installers and workers who put in long hours—often working around the clock - to ensure every detail was executed flawlessly. Their efforts have been invaluable and a crucial factor in the project's success.”

Results and impact
The project was delivered on schedule and received with great enthusiasm. The new airport is expected to drive growth in tourism and international trade, leading to increased job opportunities and strengthening the economy.

It is an honor to contribute to this project. Greenland has long been a remote destination, but this new airport is opening doors to the world, and that makes us incredibly proud,” says Jan Rasmussen.

For Arctic Import, this project represents a significant milestone, highlighting the company’s ability to deliver large-scale, complex solutions and its commitment to community development.
