Furnishing of a historic university building in the heart of Torshavn

Located in the harbor of the Faroese capital, Torshavn, stands the old salt store silo, which today is part of the University of the Faroe Islands campus. Arctic Import has supplied furniture and fixtures for this historic building, including student desks and chairs, office furniture, and cafeteria and lounge furniture.

The transition of the Faroe Islands from a fishing community to a modern society today has left clear marks across the archipelago. One such sign of this transition is the old Sjóvinnuhúsið salt store silo located in the harbor of Torshavn, at the heart of the Faroese capital. In the past, the silo was used to store salt for the Faroe Islands' massive fish production, but today it is a part of the University of the Faroe Islands.

Parts of the former salt store silo and adjacent rooms now consist of an auditorium, classrooms, a cafeteria, and associated administration offices. Furniture and fixtures for many of these teaching spaces were supplied by Arctic Import.

The salt store silo was renovated in 2018, managed by the public institution Landsverk, which is the contractor for all public constructions in the Faroe Islands. The Faroese architectural firm SNA Arkitekter was also involved in the project, and they are very satisfied with the collaboration with Arctic Import:

"In connection with the furnishing of the Setrið's premises in Sjóvinnuhúsið, I had a close and good collaboration with Arctic Import. I received quick and thorough guidance and the forwarding of material samples and catalogs. Besides the furniture itself being of a high standard, the collaboration process greatly contributed to a successful overall project," says architect Nina A. Arke from SNA Arkitekter.

Arctic Import has extensive experience in providing furniture and fixture solutions for educational institutions, particularly in the Faroe Islands. It was precisely this expertise in the North Atlantic that led to Arctic Import being chosen for the task, says Sophus E. Dal Christiansen, Sales Manager at Arctic Import, Faroe Islands.

'We placed a great focus on high-quality solutions that simultaneously require low maintenance. For example, we suggested the Cobra office chair from Labofa. In addition to being a high-quality chair with good seating comfort, it can be quickly disassembled, making it easy to replace spare parts and thus maintain", he says, adding that Arctic Import also supplied a soundproof office box, which allows for phone calls or work without disturbances”.
